I don't diagnose, treat or promise a cure with essential oils. I believe in a balanced approach. I feel Young Living offers many amazing products that help my family to support a healthy lifestyle. There are several other important factors that you need to account for. I think it's important to talk to your doctor about medical issues be informed and do research to learn and support your family.
Are you getting enough sleep? Are you eating healthy? Are you doing things that make you happy? Are you balancing your life between our busy everyday schedule. It's so important to make time for work, fun and exercise. My summer reading will be the OOLA book getting balanced in the 7 areas: field, finance, faith, fitness, fun, and family. I feel that the oils have supported me on this journey i'm on to develop all of those areas. I would love to hear how you are using the oils in your everyday life.

Should You Try Oil Pulling? We explore the ancient oral health technique to see if it's all it's cracked up to be.
By Colleen Oakley WebMD Magazine - Feature Reviewed by Eric Yabu, DDS Maybe you've seen something about it on the Internet, or a friend of a friend swears by it -- but you're not sure exactly what it is. Oil pulling is a growing trend, but it's not new. "This oral therapy is a type of Ayurvedic medicine [a traditional Indian system] that dates back 3,000 years," says Jessica T. Emery, DMD, owner of Sugar Fix Dental Loft in Chicago. "It involves swishing approximately 1 tablespoon of oil -- typically coconut, sesame, or sunflower oil -- in your mouth for about 20 minutes and then spitting it out." Unlike some so-called natural home remedies, it's not a practice that's based on pseudo-science. Recent studies show that oil pulling helps against gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath. How? "Most microorganisms inhabiting the mouth consist of a single cell," Emery says. "Cells are covered with a lipid, or fatty, membrane, which is the cell's skin. When these cells come into contact with oil, a fat, they naturally adhere to each other." Oil-Pulling TipsUse coconut oil. While you can get the same bacteria-fighting benefits with sesame or sunflower oil, coconut oil has the added benefit of lauric acid, which is well-known for its anti-microbial agents, Emery says, making it more effective. Also, a recent study found that coconut oil may help prevent tooth decay. Start with just 5 minutes a day. Twenty minutes of swishing is a long time, and while the longer you pull, the more bacteria you'll remove, 5 or 10 minutes will still offer some benefit. Also, if your jaw starts aching a few minutes in, slow down. "Don't work too hard," Emery says. "A gentle swishing, pushing, and sucking the oil through the teeth is all that's required." Don't swallow. "If you find it hard not to, you likely have too much oil in your mouth," Emery says. "Spit it out and try again with a smaller amount." Also, don't spit it down the sink, as the oil could clog your pipes. Just discard the used oil into the nearest trash can. Don't skip brushing and flossing. "Oil pulling should never replace routine dental visits and traditional home oral care," Emery says. "It doesn't reverse the effects of tooth decay, but it's a great supplemental therapy." Expert Tip"Coconut and sunflower oil aren't the only oils with dental health benefits. For irritated, inflamed gums, rub a little vitamin E oil directly on the surface. It's rich in antioxidants, easily absorbed, and helps regenerate healthy gum tissue." -- Jessica Emery, DMD View Article Sources Reviewed on June 04, 2014 © 2014 WebMD, LLC. All rights reserved. Questions about using the oils? Here are the answers and where to find even more information!3/29/2015 Q: What if I want to use more than one oil at once? A: You can mix singles, and you can mix a blend with a single, but it is a “rule” not to mix blends with other blends. Mixing them together is going to change the frequency of the oil and it may not have the same results as they would if you did them individually. It is, however, okay to layer them. The oils absorb into the skin rapidly so you can put an oil on top of another oil. Some like to wait a few minutes in between or apply it to another part of the body (a vita flex point, perhaps?) Q: How many drops are in a 5ml and 15ml bottle? A: Around 100 in a 5ml and 300 in a 15ml, depending on the viscosity of the oil. Q: Can I take too much or over apply? Can I experience detox symptoms? A: Have you heard the saying "too much of a good thing"? I really think this saying can apply to everything in life, but as far as essential oils go, I never worry. These oils are very potent and strong (remember, one drop of peppermint is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea?), so you don't have to use a lot. It is accepted by the body so quickly that it's used by your system within 20 minutes. I've heard that your body will use what it needs and get rid of the rest. I've also heard of someone who was using 1200 drops a day! I've heard that in Ecuador, they give frankincense IV's. So, can you take too much? I think it depends on your body. I always take things slow and start with a drop or two. But if I accidentally spill a whole bottle on myself, I don't worry about it at all (from the physical standpoint). If you do a lot, you can experience detox symptoms. Q: I got a new bottle of (lavender, Thieves, etc) and it smells different than previously, is that okay? A: Yes, Young Living focuses on the therapeutic constituents, not the smell, so each batch is not always going to smell the same. You can be sure that it still has the same benefits as your previous bottle. You can also set it in the back of a shelf for a while and let it “age”. Sometimes this allows the smell to sweeten up a bit. Q: Is it okay to put citrus oils in plastic/Styrofoam? A: Only if you want to experiment and watch the Styrofoam dissolve before your eyes! Citrus oils eat plastic, so be careful to use glass, ceramic, or stainless steel if you’re putting oil in your beverages. Q: I HATE the way this oil smells, why? A: When you LOVE or HATE the way an oil smells, that can be an indication that your body needs it. Q: What's a raindrop? A: Raindrop is a massage technique developed by Gary Young. There is a raindrop kit that has all the oils needed, plus a video showing you how to do it. You don’t need the kit to try it though! Use what oils you have and watch the video on You Tube! Q: I am allergic to the plant; does that mean I will be allergic to the oil too? A: Not necessarily. Plant allergies are to the protein of the plant: the leaf, the seed, the pollen, etc. None of that is present in the essential oil. Many (including myself) have used the essential oil of a plant they are allergic to with no problem. You always want to do your own research and do what you feel comfortable with. You can always try the oil in an inconspicuous location to see how you respond. Even just holding the bottle and asking your body if it can use it can be a good indicator. If you move forward that’s a “yes”, if you move back that’s a “no”. To see if this method works for you, say my name is (whatever your name is) and you should move forward. Then say my name is Jane Doe, and you should move backwards (unless your name is Jane Doe). Q: I think I'm allergic because I have a rash. A: "All you have an allergic reaction to are the acids in your body, and the oils are going in and hitting those acids and creating a spontaneous combustion (micro combustion) that creates an outburst on the skin. It’s a manifestation that you are an acid person, so get the acid out of your body." Q: How often can I reapply the oils? A: "This is the value, again, with essential oils…I have never seen an oil that will push the body beyond its normal position, its normal balance. Why? Because essential oils will only stay in the body for a maximum of 20 minutes and then they are exhausted, they are burned up by the acids in the body. The more acidic you are, the less effect the oils will have on your body. The more acidic you are, the more likely you are to have a reaction with the oils." Q: These don't seem to be working for me, am I doing something wrong? A: In the previous question, Gary told us about how the oils sacrifice themselves to the acid in your body, so the first thing you can do is check your pH. You can get litmus paper at your local health food store. Drinking lemon in water and increasing green vegetable intake have been known to help balance pH levels, the Alkalime supplement also is designed to help maintain a desirable pH level. I will also drink raw apple cider vinegar if I feel like I need to fight acid (I can only drink it if I put a small amount in some apple juice, it tastes like apple cider). Water is a neutral, I try to make sure to drink half my body weight in ounces of water a day to keep things moving out and to keep hydrated. You often have to stick with an oil for a while before deciding whether it is addressing what you are working on. Your body has to work through doing some detoxing and it may be working on something other than what you were expecting it to. But Gary has said that if it’s something you should be getting pretty immediate results from, try a different oil after 60 seconds. Last thing to ask is are you hitting it hard enough? We learned in the previous answer that the body exhausts the oil after 20 minutes. I like to set a timer and reapply faithfully! Q: I used the oils before bed and had had some really crazy dreams. Is this normal? Will it happen every time I use them before bed? A: It is normal. The oils are ridding your body of all kinds of bad things, and pent up emotions are one of them. If you are using oils at night, it might bring up something from the past. It’s bringing it up so you can deal with it! Usually, the dreams stop relatively quickly, depending on the oil used and the amount of negative emotion stored. Try this technique as described by Gary: “So simply, with this patient, we just used an oil blend called Release. This blend contains oils for the liver–Carrot seed, Celery seed, Chamomile. We just rubbed it over her liver and under her nose and had her breathe it and then just sit back and repeat... “I lovingly and willingly release and let go of all that no longer serves me in a positive, progressive way.” Therefore, she didn’t have to decide what she needed to let go of, because the conscious mind is so judgmental. If you think with the conscious mind and it thinks you are letting go of something that it’s attached to, it’s not going to. So you don’t tell the conscious mind what you are going to let go of–you simply say... “I just lovingly and willingly release and let go of all of that no longer serves me in a positive and progressive way.” This is kind of going in the back door to attack the conscious mind. Q: I'm travelling and I'd like to know more about how to travel with my oils. Am I going to have any problems with airport security? A: I hear different stories from people depending on what airport you're traveling from. You can still only carry on as many oils as will fit in a clear quart size ziplock bag. Then, most people will ask security to hand check their oils instead of having them go through the scanner. This is because they don't want to risk it changing the frequency of their oils. Some guards will treat you like a terrorist when you do this and do a full body pat down and scan and then make you open EACH bottle while they swipe the top and test it for poisons. Others will just check it out really fast and let you go on your way. It's luck of the draw. Q: I'm seeing some scary warnings about cats not being able to tolerate essential oils, now I'm scared to diffuse them. Can essential oils be used around cats? A: When using Young Living oils, I don't worry (I have friends who diffuse and their pets love it). I've heard that when you have your diffuser on just make sure that your cats can come and go from the room as they please. The Animal Desk Reference is a GREAT resource for this. The cat section says that "many misconceptions have been placed on what cats like or don't like - and it appears that these generalizations may have been made based on individual reports, and not from cats as a whole." It also says "Cats present their own unique controversies and requirements to essential oil use. Most cat owners would agree that cats have distinct opinions of the world, and this certainly holds true for aromatherapy. Cats are likely a little proud of the fact that they are indeed, the most contested topic in the world of essential oil use. Q: I see that Progessence Plus has a cancer warning on the back, what's the deal? A: "This is an outdated statement that is required by law, in California. Proposition 65 is placed on anything brought into the state of California that contains hormones. Unfortunately, the law does not differentiate between synthetics and natural hormones. Young Living has a Progessence cream, which also carries the required Prop 65 statement on the tube. This is because synthetic medroxyprogesterone acetate (which is found in so many products made for women) along with the synthetics in the various birth control pills, have all been shown to cause cancer. Research has proven that natural human progesterone does not. Here is Young Living's official statement about the warning label: -There is no cancer causing agents in Progessence Plus. This statement is due to an outdated California law that actually refers to the cancer known to be caused by the synthetic medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA as in the drug Provera) which has been shown in a number of studies to cause breast cancer. But MPA is not the human P4 or bio-identical progesterone made from natural yam products that we use in Progessence Plus - the generic chemical names are just similar. But the law is poorly written and mistakenly refers to any hormone as cancer causing when no naturally occuring human hormone has been associated with any cancer ever (not even estradiol - CEE has but no human 17-beta-estradiol). Human progesterone (even the compounded version like in Progessence Plus) actually reduces breast and ovarian cancer risk (and reduces a lot of other risks such as CAD, stroke, DVT, etc). This can all be verified by searching on PubMed. If you live in California please lobby for the change of this law. I Diluting Questions Q: What does "neat" mean? A: It means that you are using the oil straight from the bottle, without a carrier oil to dilute it. Q: What is a carrier oil? A: A carrier oil is a base oil that is used with essential oils to reduce any burning, slow the absorption rate, and spread the essential oil further. Examples are coconut, olive, jojoba, sesame, almond oils. Young Living has a carrier oil called V-6 that is a combination. Q: AHHHHH!!!!! I just got essential oils in my eye (or other sensitive part that is causing burning)! What do I do!?!? A: No worries, friend! Grab your nearest carrier oil (coconut, olive, sesame, jojoba) or if you can’t find it use vegetable oil, butter, milk, Crisco, etc. Grab some kind of fat and slather it ALL in your eye!!! It will stop the burning pronto. (No essential oils in your eyes and ears!) Q: I noticed there's some of the oils have a dilution guide on the bottle, do I need to follow this exactly, every time? A: I don't. You can start with the recommended dilution ratio if you choose to and experiment with it from there and see how your skin responds. If I choose to dilute, I'll usually just pour some in my hand or scoop some out, no exact measuring over here! Q: If I dilute the oil, will it reduce its effectiveness? A: Using it neat, or using more carrier oil than recommended is not going to reduce the effectiveness of the essential oil, it will just slow the absorption rate or reduce the hotness of the oil. Q: Is there a certain carrier oil I should be using? A: No, you can use what you have, but keep in mind that you are using Young Living oils for a reason: the high standards, the purity, the quality, and the therapeutic benefits. Do you really want to mix that awesome product with cheap carrier oil? It could be rancid, it could be over processed, it could be GMO. You want to use a high quality carrier oil with your essential oils, so don’t use your vegetable oil, or something like Crisco, unless it’s an emergency. Try to find an organic, cold pressed, minimally processed coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil, jojoba oil, or other high quality oil. If you want to just stick with Young Living, they offer a carrier oil called V-6. A lot of people I know use Tropical Traditions coconut oil. Q: Which oils are generally regarded as "hot" oils? A: Oregano, lemongrass, thyme, clove, hyssop, and lemon are the ones that are generally regarded as hot. Everyone's chemical make-up is different, so what may be hot to me, may not be hot to you, and what may be hot to you one time, may not bother you the next time. It's always a good idea to keep a carrier oil with you just in case you experience a hot oil unexpectedly. Pregnancy and Children QuestionsQ: Is it okay to use on babies? A: I have used them on my son since he was around two months (and probably would have used them sooner if I had been into it by then!) Reading "Gentle Babies" really helped me to decide whether this was right for me and my son. I have many friends that have been using oils on their babies since birth. Do your own research and go with your "mommy" (or daddy!) gut Q: Why does my panaway have a childproof cap? A: Some oils that have wintergreen and hyssop in them have childproof caps. Wintergreen is 90% methyl salicylate. It also is said to smell like root beer, so the cap may be to discourage them from drinking the whole thing. You always want to do your own research before using an essential oil on your child to find out if you personally feel comfortable using that oil on them. Children already have thin skin, and the oils are very strong. Citrus oils can cause photosensitivity. Some oils are “hot” and can cause the skin to be irritated; oregano, lemongrass, and thyme are some examples. Q: I put peace and calming on my child and it seemed to have the opposite reaction! A: Everyone has a different chemical makeup. Sometimes the oils don’t work in the way we were hoping, but that doesn’t mean it’s not doing something beneficial! Peace and Calming works great for my oldest, but Valor seems to suit my little man better. Q: Is it okay to use while pregnant/nursing? A: According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, the essential oils to avoid during pregnancy are: Basil, Calamus, Clary Sage, Fennel, Hyssop, Nutmeg, Rosemary, Sage, Tansy and Tarragon. Fennel and Clary Sage can help to accelerate labor once it has begun. DO NOT use these last 2 unless you're full term and labor has already started. According to the Quick Reference Guide for Using Essential Oils, the oils to avoid are: basil, birch, calamus, cassia, cinnamon bark, hyssop, idaho tansy, lavandin, rosemary, sage, tarragon, Di-Gize, Dragon Time, Exodus II, Grounding, Mister, Estro, FemiGen, ParaFree, Protec Oils to use cautiously are angelica, cedarwood, chamomile, cistus, citronella, clary sage, clove bud, cumin, cypress, davana, fennel, laurel, marjoram, mountain savory, myrrh, nutmeg, peppermint, rose, spearmint, vetiver, yarrow, aroma siex, clarity, harmony, immupower, relieve it, thieves, prenolone, prenolone+, comfortone, essentialzyme, dragon time massage oil "Oils that are diluted, applied externally, and used in moderation should not create a problem" Q: I just read something about lavender and tea tree oil causing “man boobs” in little boys, is this true? A: From what I understand, this is a reaction only found in synthetic oils. Here's an interesting article on the subject. Diffuser Questions Q: Can I put my oils in my candle warmer? A: "Goodness–what happens when you burn an oil? You destroy 70% to 90% of the benefit! That’s why you have a diffuser" Q: Can I use my humidifier? A: It's not a good idea to put your oils inside your humidifier. It works differently than a diffuser and it can cause it to stop working. Some humidifiers state that if you put essential oils inside your humidifier, it will actually void the warranty. Many humidifiers use a filter, which may also cause problems. My suggestion, until you can get a diffuser, is to tape a paper towel or cotton ball with essential oils on it over where the mist comes out. Q: Do I need to dump the residual water out of my diffuser before I add new oils/water? A: No you do not need to. You can just add more water and oil to it. If you want to clean it you can dump the water into a glass, take a q-tip with some vinegar or alcohol and wipe the inside, particularly the metal plate in the center. Then let it air dry before running it again. But I wouldn't recommend just letting water sit in there all the time if you're having a long period of time between diffusing. Q: I saw that there is a recommended time to diffuse, do I really need to shut it off after five minutes? A: This is just a suggestion. If you notice your nose becoming slightly irritated, you may want to take a break. You can purchase diffusers and nebulizers that have timer settings that will eliminate the need for you to worry about it. Q: I put too much water in my YL diffuser and there is water coming out of the bottom, is this okay? A: The YL home diffuser is designed so that water pours out of the bottom when you fill it too much. You may want to scoop some water off the top, as the diffuser does not produce steam when it is filled too high. You may also want to let it dry for a minute before turning it on. Q: My diffuser isn’t steaming, what should I do? A: If you are using distilled or filtered water, try using tap water. If that doesn’t work clean the metal plate on the bottom of your diffuser with alcohol and let it air dry. If it still isn’t working contact Young Living’s Live Help with your member and pin numbers. Young Living and ER Questions Q: How do I contact YL? A: Click here to see the list of different ways that you can get in touch with Young Living Q: I just received a shipment and one of my bottles is leaking, what should I do? A: Contact Live Help and they will ship you another bottle free of charge (in my experience)! Q: What is the Essential Rewards program? A: It's an autoship program that earns you free stuff, yay! You have to order a minimum of 50PV (point value, which is usually = to $ value) a month. You can change the day it's processed and the stuff in your cart whenever you want to! You also get one month a year where you can not order without losing your points (but you have to tell Live Chat that's what you are doing that month). The first 6 months you get 10% of your order back. The next 6 months you get 15%. After that you earn 20%. So, if you ordered exactly 50PV of product, you would have 30 points to redeem. That's 1-2 free oils! The next 6 months it would be 45 points! That's on top of any monthly promotions they may be offering! If you find yourself wanting to budget, this is a great way to do that. You can also purchase special kits that are discounted and only available through essential rewards. Q: How do I redeem my ER points? A: You may spend your points over the phone or through chat. You may spend only the amount of rewards points you have available, and may not pay for any further items with cash. You are only allowed to redeem 350 points a month. The items you purchase with your rewards points must be full PV items, meaning the PV amount and the wholesale dollar amount must be equal. You are responsible for shipping, which generally starts at $9-10 dollars. Your rewards points order must be separate from any of your regular orders. (If you're in the new beta you can redeem your points online without help!) Q: Do my ER points expire? A: Yes, you have to use them within a year from when you earned them. Q: YL versus other oil companies, why should we pick this one when it's so much more expensive than the stuff at the store? A: There are significant differences between synthetic fragrance oils and pure essential oils. All Young Living Essential Oils are pure. There are 4 grades of essential oils. • Grade A oils are pure therapeutic and superior quality. They are usually made from organically grown plants, and are distilled at the proper temperatures. • Grade B oils are food grade, they may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, extenders, or carrier oils. • Grade C are perfume grade and may contain the same type of adulterating chemicals as food grade oils. They usually contain solvents which are used to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents are not healthy. • Floral Water is a byproduct of the distillation process, a very high quality, IF it comes from a Grade A distillation process. Accordingly, it is a low quality if it comes from poor quality raw materials and/or poor distillations processes. Synthetic fragrance oils may duplicate the smell of the pure botanical, but the complex chemical components of each essential oil created in nature determine its true benefits. In other words, synthetic fragrance oils will not have the medicinal properties; they are NOT suitable for aromatherapy.
